Weekly Wrap-Up

By Mike Long, on Jan 29, 2016

Our annual CPPAC gathering starts Sunday, and the special guests joining us for this exciting event have been making news.

Our friend E.J. McMahon, who will address the gathering Sunday, is a “go-to” source for fiscally conservative insights on Gov. Cuomo’s constant spending sprees.

E.J. is also an important voice against Cuomo’s massive minimum wage hike – conservative support is strong against the Governor’s sweeping, one-size-fits-all proposal.

According to Assembly Minority Leader Brian Kolb, who will deliver dinner remarks Monday night, “A proposed $15 per hour wage will hurt precisely those workers it is meant to help.” You can read his full op-ed here.

Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis, who will speak Monday on the so-called DREAM Act and illegal immigration, is also leading the way on combatting drug abuse in our state, with a special focus on harsher penalties for drug dealers.

As New Yorkers gather for the Conservative Party’s 2016 CPPAC, what do you think is the biggest challenge facing our state? That’s the first question in our new Weekly Poll – cast your vote today!

I just came across this article about the unions’ domination of New York – this goes a long way toward explaining why it costs so much to do business here.

Last night, of course, we witnessed the spectacle of the “Trump-less” GOP presidential debate.

The Weekly Standard saw the debate as “what might have been,” with solid contenders addressing serious issues without the Trump distraction. National Review calls it a draw. The Washington Times feels that Trump still dominated the debate, while the Washington Examiner saw the focus as squarely on Hillary Clinton.

John Podhoretz, writing in the New York Post, takes an “everybody wins” view of the debate, while Rich Lowry sees Trump as an Establishment litmus test

To Charles Krauthammer, it’s looking like a three-sided battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party.

Meanwhile… which Republican is Gov. Cuomo supporting? Fred Dicker has an interesting theory: That Andrew doesn’t want Hillary to win this year, so he can take the lead for 2020.

The Iowa Caucuses are Monday – I can’t even begin to predict what will happen, but I can guarantee everyone at the CPPAC meeting will be paying close attention. What do you believe is the most important thing to watch for in the GOP race AFTER the Iowa Caucuses? Give your answer now for our second Weekly Poll question.

And finally this week, we have the shameful spectacle of the New York City Council scheming to raise its own pay, and to give fatter salaries to other city officials.

I can think of several groups that are far more deserving of a raise – which group would you pick? I’m including an “all of the above” option for this third Weekly Poll question – see if that’s what you choose, and cast your vote today.

And have a great weekend – hopefully I will see you at CPPAC Sunday and Monday!
